Susan Mannion

About the artist

Susan Mannion worked firstly for the BBC, light entertainment/ popular music in the dizzying years of the 60's and then as P.A. to the Head of special effects at Shepperton Studios. Later, film studies was the catalyst for appreciating the importance of the placing of subject matter within a framework, the dramatic use of light,, and the mysteries of soft focus, merging objects. She likes her pictures to tell a story

The next few years were spent in Livingsstone, Zambia, working for the Head of the Town Council. These were the heady first years of independence and we were there to facilitate the changeover. Further years were spent in Nigeria, helping to form the next generation of teachers.

Returning to England, Susan's artistic energies were channeled into making stained glass. The love of capturing filtered light led naturally to watercolour. She was tutored by Francis Bowyer and going on to oils she was tutored by his late brother, Jason. She often goes straight into painting with a palette knife and uses a mirror to check geometric harmony. She has exhibited at Hogarth House and has sold at The New English
