Artist of the month – December
Colleen Hillman
Have you always been interested in art?
Always, and its histories. It’s my passion and feeds my soul.
What about ceramics?
While experimenting with glass, metal and clay, I discovered how much I enjoyed working in three dimensions. Ceramics has become my main focus for the past 10 years. I have tried many processes and used different clays but I discovered my love of slip casting using porcelain clay when I was at UCA Farnham doing a masters degree in ceramics.
Do you have a favourite ceramic artist?
I have admired the work of Lucie Rie since I first saw her bowls in the V&A many years ago. I don’t think she would like to be called a ceramic artist. Her work was thrown on a wheel so she was very much a potter. She was one of the most significant figures in British post-war pottery. Her extraordinary and interesting background has fascinated me as much as her work. Her unique style and simplicity of form has helped to inform my own work.
Have you always lived in London?
No, but I came to London when I was in my early twenties and have never looked back. It’s such a brilliant city with so much to offer. Apparently, there are more than 200 museums and 800 art galleries! I now live in the leafy suburbs of Barnes and feel very much at home there. It has such a community atmosphere which is important to me. I’m originally from Brighton and still spend time there. I love the sea.
What does Barnes Artists mean to you?
I love the fact that we come together to share our creative interests. We meet once a month to discuss projects, listen to talks, plan outings or just enjoy each other’s company. Great support and friendships have been formed over the years.
